Cafe Mademoiselle
by Michael H. Hanson
A quiet room, a simple chair,
approaching noon one restless day,
the last of Spring bleeds from the air.
She wonders how she came this way.
Her little table is both scarred
and stained by years and teapot tears.
What once was lovely is now marred
with shaky legs and garish smears.
The echo from children outside
still resonates in pastel walls
that muffle what her pride can t hide
from curious and passing souls.
Feeling, at once, sad and sublime
she sheds a tear, then sips her wine.
